Litigation & Process Manager – Law Firm


Our client is a large international law firm and they are looking for a Litigation Lawyer with 3+ years experience to assist in managing a team of young lawyers and paralegals who do bulk legal work - i.e. document processing, and procedural legal work in a legal practice.

This is a non-practicing role and you will not have your own fee target. It is within a large law firm though.

We are ideally looking for an Associate 3 or Snr Associate 1 from a large firm or reputable litigation firm that does COMMERCIAL LITIGATION, who will be a great manager to a young team, and who is looking to stay in practice, or a law firm environment, but not do the actual litigation drafting and work on a day to day basis. Similar to a Professional Support role, but more in a management capacity.

Minimum Requirements

LLB and Admitted Attorney
3+ years PQE in Commercial Litigation (Must have good marks or large firm exposure)
Great analytical skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Good IT skills - able to get to grips with various IT systems quickly. Cutting edge legal tech available in this role.
Eager to manage personnel.

Role Description

You will have line management responsibility for a group of Legal Analysts as direct reports.

You role will include supporting the Manager in supervising Legal Analysts on fee earning projects on a day-to-day basis. The Senior Lawyer will play a proactive role in supervising the performance of fee earners and will assist the Manager with strategic management and delivery of matters. They will also be expected from time to time to step up and lead projects, escalating to the Manager who will support as necessary.

• Assists the Manager in managing the delivery of fee-earning work to the best possible standards of legal quality.
• Overall responsibility for the management and delivery of fee earning matters in a leadership role where required (i.e. steps up into a Manager role).
• Supervises Legal Analysts conducting fee earning projects and carries out first-level review on projects where necessary.
• Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of relevant areas of law to the Disputes practice.
• Assists the Manager as required by the Senior Managers/Head of Disputes for the region, in drafting, updating and revising internal processes relating to our Disputes practice.
• Supports with pricing at the outset of a matter and then assists in managing costs and billing throughout, under the supervision of the Manager.
• Supports with the development of workflow for specific projects (e.g. drafting relevant sections of the review manual).
• Assists the Manager in the drafting and preparation of case-related communications with clients and required reporting throughout a project. Good drafting skills will be essential.
• Assists the Manager in project managing the Johannesburg team on individual matters, including:
o Dealing with complex issues on individual matters that are escalated by the Legal Analysts.
o Communication with the internal client (partner/managing associate) on individual matters where appropriate.
o Ensuring that relevant legal issues are understood by the Johannesburg team working on a matter on an on-going basis and raising training issues with the Manager.
o Conducting quality control (e.g. to check all fee earning work is being conducted accurately), as directed by the Manager.
o Managing the appropriate technology employed for each matter.
o Ensuring own and team compliance with financial disciplines on matters.
o Where required by specific projects, managing the billing process/WIP management.
o Liaising with teams elsewhere in the firm (e.g. Belfast) as required on projects.
• Line management responsibility for Legal Analysts as direct reports, including:
o Coaching and mentoring team members to ensure high performance.
o Performance management.
o Addressing issues promptly with individuals and if necessary escalating issues with respect to conduct and performance on projects to the HR team when necessary.
o Absence management including holiday approvals, sickness, other leave.
