Senior Business Developer


Our client is a multinational renewable energy company.

They have a strong presence in the markets with 112.7 GW gross capacity in operation and a significant program of 5.2 GW gross capacity of projects under construction.

Our client has regional hubs in Johannesburg, Nairobi, Cote d’Ivoire and Morocco, and is responsible for all of power development activities in Africa. In Morocco, they have a operating 300 MW wind farm and an extensive services business. In South Africa, two gas-fired power plants and one wind farm totalling just over 1 000 MW, are in operations while a 100 MW Concentrated Solar Plant is currently under construction

They are involved with energy activities in 32 countries across five regions worldwide.

Minimum Requirements

- Minimum 12 years’ relevant working experience in international business transactions and project development within the power generation industry
- Experience with technical, financial, economic and legal aspects of business transactions. Previous experience in the African or emerging market energy sector is a preference
- Capable of managing oneself in a high workload, short deadline and competitive environment and delivering the expected business outcome
- Demonstrable track record in successful financial close in the development and implementation of non-recourse financed Independent Power Producer projects is preferred
- Additional experience in gas business development is desirable

- Fluent in English, knowledge of other language(s) will be beneficial

- Proficiency in MS Office
- Advanced knowledge of Power Point and Excel

Specific Knowledge / skills (but not limited to)
- Detailed knowledge of energy markets (with countries in Africa preferred);
- Strong working knowledge of agreements, contracts and licences required to develop, finance, construct and operate power generation and/or gas businesses;
- Knowledge of power technologies including Open Cycle Gas Turbine (OCGT), Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT), and renewables i.e. solar, wind, hydro, biomass;
- Knowledge of project finance mechanics and risk allocation;
- Experience in negotiating confidentiality agreements, partnership agreements, offtake agreements, service agreements and other transaction agreements;
- Commercial and technical skills including project management, commercial and financial acumen, negotiation experience, and risk assessment;
- Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills;
- Able to work in a multicultural environment and with multidisciplinary teams;
- Strong intellectual capacity and able to deal with complexity;

Role Description

The purpose of this position is to lead the identification, evaluation, development and delivery of business growth opportunities which fit our client's Africa’s strategic objectives and deliver financial performance based on Group’s financial criteria and risk allocation based on the structured deal.
These opportunities will primarily be focused on new activities related to low carbon power generation (multi-types of generation technology), Cogen, LNG regasification and/or gas projects in Southern Africa’s markets, arising through:

• Greenfield development,
• Acquisitions,
• Brownfield development,
• Other energy related technology developments.

Primary focus will be Southern Africa however could include other countries across Africa.

Location / travel
- Place of residence: Johannesburg, South Africa.
- Frequent travel through Africa and particularly within the Southern African region.
